7 Common Car Washing Mistakes That Damage Paintwork
We see it a lot. Someone's kept their car spotless for years, washing it every weekend without fail, and then they bring it to us wondering why the paint looks tired and covered in fine scratches under the sun. Nine times out of ten it's not neglect, it's the washing technique itself that's been doing the damage. Here are the mistakes we come across most often, and what to do instead.
1. Using Washing Up Liquid
It cleans, sure, but it also strips any wax or sealant off the paint and dries it out over time. Fairy liquid is designed to cut through grease on plates, not to be gentle on clear coat. If you're washing at home, a proper pH-neutral car shampoo is worth the few extra pounds. It's the difference between cleaning your paint and slowly degrading it.
2. One Bucket, No Method
This is probably the biggest one. If you're dunking the same sponge or mitt into the same bucket of soapy water the whole way round the car, you're picking up grit off the paint and then dragging it straight back over the panels. That's exactly how swirl marks happen. A two-bucket method, one for soap, one for rinsing the mitt before it goes back in the suds, makes a genuine difference. It sounds fussy, but it's one of the simplest changes that actually protects the finish.
3. Washing in Direct Sunlight
Washing a car that's hot from sitting in the sun means the shampoo dries onto the paint before you've had a chance to rinse it off properly, leaving water spots and soap residue behind. Early morning or evening is better, or at least find some shade if you can.
4. Skipping the Pre-Wash Rinse
Going straight in with a sponge on a dirty car is asking for trouble. Loose grit and dirt sitting on the paint gets ground in the moment you start wiping, and that's before you've even picked up a mitt. A decent rinse first, ideally with a snow foam or pre-wash, lifts the worst of it off before anything touches the surface.
5. Drying with the Wrong Towel
An old bath towel or a rag from the shed feels harmless, but rough fibres drag across the paint and can leave fine scratches, especially once they've picked up a bit of grit themselves. A proper microfibre drying towel is soft enough not to mark the surface, and it's a cheap fix for a mistake we see constantly.
6. Ignoring the Wheels Until Last
Wheels carry brake dust, road grime and general muck that's genuinely abrasive. If you wash the wheels with the same mitt you're using on the paintwork, or wash them last and let overspray sit on the bodywork the whole time, you're introducing exactly the kind of contamination that causes damage. Wheels should always get their own separate wash, and ideally get done first.
7. Not Topping Up Protection
Even with perfect technique, washing gradually wears down whatever protection is on the paint, whether that's wax, sealant or the early stages of a ceramic coating. Keep washing a car with no protection left and you're essentially cleaning bare paint every time, which speeds up fading and makes it far more vulnerable to scratching. If you're not sure what's still on there or when it was last topped up, it's worth asking, it's usually a quick fix rather than a full redo.
